Summary:
Lay out, fits, and welds fabricated, cast, and forged components to assemble structural forms, such as tanks, pressure vessels, furnace shells, and building and bridge parts.
Essential Knowledge and Skill Requirements:
- Weld components in flat, vertical, or overhead positions
- Operate safety equipment and use safe work habits
- Lay out, position, align, and secure parts and assemblies prior to assembly, using straightedges, combination squares, calipers, and rulers
- Examine work pieces for defects and measure work pieces with straightedges or templates to ensure conformance with specifications
- Recognize, set up, and operate hand and power tools common to the welding trade, such as shielded metal arc and gas metal arc welding equipment
- Weld separately or in combination, using aluminum, cast iron, and other alloys
- Clamp, hold, tack-weld, heat-bend, grind or bolt component parts to obtain required configurations and positions for welding
- Select and install torches, torch tips, filler rods, and flux, according to welding chart specifications or types and thicknesses of metals
- Ignite torches or start power supplies and strike arcs by touching electrodes to metals being welded, completing electrical circuits
- Connect and turn regulator valves to activate and adjust gas flow and pressure so that desired flames are obtained

Basic Functional Job Requirements:
Workers should be able to:
- Rate information using standards that can be measured or checked
- Work within precise limits or standards of accuracy
- Look at flat drawings, pictures, and blueprints and visualize how they would look as solid objects with height, width, and depth
- See detail in objects or drawings and recognize slight difference in shapes or shading and work easily and skillfully with hands
- Be able to lift/carry objects weighing 50 pounds unassisted
- Climb up on and balance on ladders, scaffolding, or stairs
- See and hear well (Either naturally or with correction)
- Stand for long periods
- Stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl to reach hard to get at work areas and use hands and arms to reach for, grasp, and manipulate objects
- Completion of apprenticeship program and certification at one or more levels may be required.
- The ability to keep the hand and arm steady while making an arm movement or while holding the arm and hand in one position
- The ability to quickly make coordinated movements of one hand, a hand together with its arm, or two hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble objects
- The ability to use one's abdominal and lower back muscles to support part of the body repeatedly or continuously over time without "giving out" or fatiguing
- The ability to exert muscle force repeatedly or continuously over time. This involves muscular endurance and resistance to muscle fatigue
Physical Work Environment:
- Work in dusty or dirty surroundings
- May be exposed to/ required to handle hazardous material such as diesel fuel and similar petroleum products with PPE provided to minimize exposure
- May be required to work at night
- May be exposed to extreme heat and cold environments of a limited basis
Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent educational attainments preferred
- One to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Welding certifications are a plus
